KANO – Prices of pepper and onion have risen slightly in Kano, barely few days to the Christmas and New Year festivities, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
A survey conducted by a NAN correspondent in some markets showed that a sack of onion which cost N6,000 before was now being sold at N7,000.
Khalil Musa, one of the onion sellers at Sabon Gari Market said, “Onion is very expensive now; I don’t even sell onion of N20. I sell from N50 upward due to its scarcity.’’
According to him, a basket of the commodity now costs N2,500 as against N2,000.
Bello Saleh, a pepper seller at Rimi Market in Kano metropolis, attributed the price increase to high demand for the commodities because of the forthcoming Christmas celebration.
On vegetables and tomatoes, Saleh said they were not expensive during the harmatan period because they were usually produced in a large scale during the season.(NAN)
