GUSAU – An official of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Zamfara State, Mr Murtala Mani, on Friday emerged the winner of an essay competition in the state.
The competition, which had no fewer than 241 participants was organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Chapel at the state’s Radio and Television Station, Gusau. Mani, whose essay was on “Security Challenges and the Way Forward for Nigeria”, won a motorcycle, the star prize of the competition.
Participants were given the choice to write on any topic under HIV/AIDS, Security, Female Education and Shariah Legal System.
At the ceremony at the Broadcasting House in Gasau, the Commissioner for Information in the state, Alhaji Ibrahim Birnin-Magaji, described the competition as challenging.
He urged other professional groups and agencies in the state to emulate the NUJ by organising extra-curricular activities. Birnin-Magaji assured that the moribund television section of the broadcasting station would be activated, in addition to purchasing new transmitters “so that we can go full digital.”
The Managing Director of the station, Mr Muhammad Maru, commended NUJ for organising the competition and promised the assistance of the management of the station to the union’s endeavours. In his remark, Chairman of the NUJ in the chapel, Mallam Ibrahim Karakkai, said that the union would make a compilation of all the essays to make them reference materials. (NAN)
