LAGOS – A civil servant, Mr Musibau Lawal, has pleaded with an Igando Customary Court in Lagos to[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”10″] dissolve his three-year-old marriage over threat to his life from his wife.
Musibau, 43, told the court on Friday that his wife, Wunmi, 36, was always threatening his life with [pro_ad_display_adzone id=”10″]cutlass and knife.
“Anytime we have a misunderstanding or we are fighting, she will always bring out a knife or cutlass;[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”10″] swearing to kill me,” he said.
He added that Wunmi would often undress herself to rain curses on him whenever they had conflicts.
“She is fond of standing naked to curse me and her curses had always come to pass in my life. This is a woman that has never prayed for me.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”8″]
“There was a day she cursed me that I will be sacked from work and true to her curse, when I got to office that same day, I was greeted with a sack letter.
“On getting back home that day, she again cursed me that I will never see a helper and that I will never make it in life.
“I had to run away from the house to avert her numerous curses,” he said.
Musibau also claimed that his wife had often embarrassed him in public; fighting and dragging his clothes.
“My wife has turned me into a laughing stock in my area to the extent that I always sneak in and out of my house just to avoid people making jest of me,” he said.
He said he was no longer interested in his marriage and that he was afraid he would one day lose his life to her.
He, therefore, pleaded with the court to dissolve the marriage.
The respondent, Wunmi, a fashion designer, however, claimed that she only used the knife for self defence.
“I don’t mean to hurt him with the knife, but I always use it as a defence to prevent him from beating me,” she said.
She denied ever cursing her husband, but that she had always handed him over to God to defend her.
She also said that Musibau had always accused her of being the mastermind behind the illness of his second wife.
Wunmi, who has a child for Musibau, says her husband complains a lot.
“My husband is good at complaining and he has often complained about my sleeping naked in our matrimonial room.
“To me, I do not see anything wrong in this, after all, as husband and wife, I do not see the need to be covering myself,” she said.
She, therefore, pleaded with the court not to dissolve her marriage on the grounds that she was still in love with Musibau.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mr Rufus Adeyeri, the President of the court, adjourned the case to Jan. 15 for judgment. (NAN)
