Clearing agent docked over alleged N300,000 fraud

Lagos –  A clearing agent, Rapheal Oladipo, was on Wednesday arraigned in a Surulere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, over N300,000 fraud.

Oladipo, 37, whose address was not provided, was arraigned on a four-count charge of conspiracy, stealing, obtain under false pretences and stealing.

He pleaded not guilty in the offence which contravened Sections 409, 312(a), 285 and 285(9.b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Salami Olugbenga, told the court that the accused and others still at large, committed the offences at Apapa Wharf, Lagos, sometimes in October.

Olugbenga said the complainant, Abosede Yusuf, gave Oladipo, who pretended to be a clearing agent, N300,000 on Sept. 23, to help her clear an unregistered T.4. Volkswagen bus.

“The accused refused to neither clear it nor refund the money and each time she calls him, he comes up with excuses,’’ he said.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.A. Famobiwo, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Famobiwo said the sureties should provide evidence of civic duties, must be gainfully employed and should reside within the jurisdiction of the court.

The case was adjourned till Nov. 27, for mention. (NAN)
