IBADAN – A cleric, Tajudeen Hamzat, has urged Muslims to fulfill their Zakatul-fitri pledge before the end of the Ramadan.
Hamzat, who is the Imam of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, made the call on Thursday while speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the essence of the Islamic tenet.
Zakatul-fitri is the Islamic obligation of distributing foodstuff to the needy a day or two before the Eid-el-Fitr celebration marking the end of the Ramadan.
Hamzat said:“ The Prophet Muhammed said what is very mandatory for every Muslim who witnesses the Ramadan is to give Zakatul-fitri.

“The essence is that during the month of Ramadan, we might have committed one error or the other being human.
“Zakatul-fitri serves as a means of cleansing the errors we might have committed while fasting.’’
He, however, said only married men are to carry out this obligation on behalf of their wives and children.
“ If the man does not have the means, the wife can carry out this obligation on behalf of her husband and children.
“Giving Zakatul-fitri is to prevent begging by the needy during the Eid-el-fitri celebration, ‘’ Hamzat added.
