Lagos- The Director of Social Communications, Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, Monsignor Gabriel Osu, has urged Christians to use the occasion of Palm Sunday to reconcile themselves with God and fellow human beings.
He said that Palm Sunday marked the beginning of the Holy Week, adding that the humility and selfless service of Jesus Christ made him to die on the cross for the salvation of mankind.
“Palm Sunday, which is the beginning of the most holy of the sublime week of the Christendom, why is it called holy week? It contains the three most important days in the life of church.
“That is Palm Sunday; it introduces Holy Thursday, institution of priesthood, institution of the Eucharist the body of Christ, good Friday, giving to the suffering.
“Death and resurrection of our lord Jesus Christ on Sunday, Easter, we have been coming from lent emphasizing intensive prayers and if any nation needs prayers, Nigeria should be one of them.
“In the sense that, we are going through stress hence prayers against bribery, prayers against corruption, prayers against inordinate ambition, so many things bedeviling us.
“So lent is not just to pray, so prayer implies action, fasting is not just to punish yourself from not eating, things you save from fasting, use to help the poor.
“Unfortunately I don’t think for many, this is the idea of fasting and when you are even doing these things, your left should not know what your right and your right should not know what your left is doing’’.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Palm Sunday is the Sunday preceding Easter which is celebrated by Christians worldwide in remembrance of Jesus Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem. (NAN)
