Ibadan – The Christian wing of the Oyo State Pilgrims Welfare Board has said that the economic recession facing the country could be addressed spiritually with prayers to complement government’s efforts.
The Chairman of the board, Rev. Dr David Moradeyo, said at the 1st Ecumenical Fellowship of the board in Ibadan on Friday that the fellowship was to bring people together and make supplications to God concerning the state of the nation.
Referring to 2 Chronicles 7: 14 in the Bible, Moradeyo called on Christians to wake up and intercede for the country.
“The recession must be tackled spiritually and the church is required to wake up to its spiritual responsibility and pray for God to revive us to witness the change we desire.
“In line with the scripture, if we will humble ourselves and pray, God has promised to hear us and heal our land.
“The church must be at the forefront of this movement if we want the economy up and running again,’’ he said.
The chairman also solicited for prayers to the leaders of the country, including the governor of the state, his wife and members of the cabinet.
“Praying for leaders is scriptural; the Bible says we must pray for all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all Godliness and holiness.
“Rather than criticism, let us pray for them to lead us right and into greatness,’’ he said.
The cleric said that as Nigerians observed the 56th Independence Day anniversary, they should be thankful.
“It could have been worse but we are grateful to God that we are not at war and there is peace in the land,’’ he said.
The chairman said that in spite of the economic downturn and with the stoppage of government sponsorship of pilgrimage, people who could afford it should go on pilgrimage for spiritual renewal.
