Lagos – Mr Kunle Awobodu, President, Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG), has urged the Federal and State Governments to increase efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change in the country.
Awobodu gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Tuesday.
According to him, efforts so far made by the federal and state governments were not enough to mitigate the effects of climate change in the country.
“What we are doing in Nigeria in the name of tackling the effects of climate change is more of an academic exercise.
“So far enough efforts are not being made to reduce depletion of the ozone layers.
“Emission of dangerous carbons is going on indiscriminately and unchecked nationwide especially in Lagos with unending traffic congestion.
“Some of the ‘Tokunbo’ fridges and air-conditioners that are not good for the environment are still being imported into the country,” he said.

He said that sand mining activities was ongoing around lagoons and rivers indiscriminately without monitoring and sanctions.
Awobodu said that government had overlooked the implications of sand mining activities on the sea and the resultant beach erosion around the coastal regions was alarming.
He said further that the felling of trees was still unchecked pointing out that even the Iroko trees were being felled without efforts to replant them.
The BCPG president warned that the whole nation was at risk of the deadly consequences of climate change unless government stepped up its efforts to mitigate the effects. (NAN)
