LAGOS – The Head Coach of the Niger State Handball Association, Solomon Yola, has called on stakeholders to ensure that regular competitions are put in place to promote the sport.
Yola told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in a telephone interview that the aim was to provide an opportunity for athletes to compete favourable with their counterparts.
He said that such championships should begin from the Local Government to the state level, noting that “ talent hunt championships must be given utmost attention by authorities at all levels.
“Such championships enable us to identify raw talents in their prime and as a way of further developing them, they must gain the required experience to excel.’’
According to him, the responsibility of developing the sport in the country should not be left to the national body, stressing that a lot could be achieved with collective effort.
The coach boasted that talents of various age categories abound in the sport nationwide, noting that it was proper to give athletes opportunities to exhibit their talents.
He added that an adequate follow-up programme should be organised for identified players as a way of proper mentoring to the technical requirement that would groom athletes to stardom.
“The only way to achieve positive result in our budding talents is to subject them to a thorough training programme under the supervision of seasoned technical officials,’’ he added.
Yola, however, pleaded with corporate bodies and handball lovers to identify with sport development by way of responding positively to proposals from various associations to enable them hold events. (NAN)
