Lagos – Jide Abidoye, a former-baseball national coach, on Thursday urged clubs to make use of the donated baseball equipment judiciously, to enhance the development of the sport at the grassroots.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the US Embassy last month donated equipment worth N6million to Tomorrow Baseball Academy.
Abidoye told NAN that making proper use of such equipment would attract more donation to the country.
He noted that lack of sufficient equipment for players was one of the major challenges militating against the growth of the sport.
“Now that we have started receiving equipment donated from outside the country, it is expected of us that we utilise the equipment for the right purpose.
“The opportunity can also be used to turn around the image of the sport at the grassroots,” he said.
He urged the Nigeria Baseball and Softball Association (NBSA) to set-up a monitoring committee that would ensure that donated equipment were used for the right purpose.
Meanwhile, NAN gathered that six little league clubs had been chartered by the US baseball clubs.
Following this recognition, the chartered clubs would be assisted with baseball equipment by their US-based parent clubs.(NAN)
