Lagos – A grassroots’ boxing coach, Ademola Faniyi, on Thursday urged the management of Isolo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State to create training grounds for sports development there.
Faniyi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that lack of training grounds and sporting facilities were the banes hindering the development of sports in most communities.
“We are facing a lot of challenges as boxers and trainers, we lack training grounds and sporting facilities to develop our talented boxers.
“If only the council chairman can hear our cry, we will surely dominate the boxing scene and produce quality boxers that will win laurels for the nation in the near future,’’ Faniyi said.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”70560″]
He said that some of the boxers he trained won three gold medals and one bronze in the 2015 Ibile Games for Isolo community.
This should spur the chairman into believing in him and his boxers, he said.
Faniyi said that being the trainer of Kazeem Isiaka, a silver medalist, at the U-17 championship in the heavy weight division in Bulgaria, was a testimony of his coaching prowess.
He said that there were many undiscovered talents in Isolo which could be tapped through training with adequate facilities and would become quality boxers.
“We call on the council and lovers of the sport to come to our aid and support the sport’s development at grassroots,’’ he said.
NAN reports that the boxers currently spend two hours on Thursdays and Saturdays in a makeshift building in the area to train. (NAN)
