Dr Ayo Babalola, the Dean of Faculty of Environmental Sciences, University of Ilorin, has advised Nigerians to patronise professionals to curtail growing incidence of building collapse in the country.
Babalola gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Ilorin.
He identified lack of sub-soil investigation and supervision, use of substandard materials, quackery and poor workmanship as the major causes of rising incidence of building collapse. According to him, failure to engage the services of professionals in the bid to cut corners and make profit is responsible for many cases of building collapse in the country.

“Many Nigerians do not really know the value of surveying which is significant in order to manage land resources and put it into optimal uses.
“For instance, if you want to build a structure like this, you need to carry out soil test to ascertain the porosity and all other things that the land has for you.
“It will also tell you if the soil can really accommodate the weight of that structure,” he said.
Babalola said that the incidence of building collapse will continue unabated until the desired changes were effected in the building sector to make sure that everybody did the correct thing.
Babalola advised that the government should introduce policies and sanctions to check activities of quacks.
The environment expert also dwelt extensively on issues of global warming, saying the ways we managed our wastes were still not up to global standards.
He said that this had also contributed to the pollution of the water ways and degeneration of the atmosphere. (NAN
