Abuja – The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has inaugurated a Special Committee to identify the problems militating against easy access to laws enacted by Federal and state governments.
This is contained in a statement issued by the Chief Press Officer of the commission, Fatima Mohammed, in Abuja on Thursday.
The Executive Secretary of the commission, Prof. Bem Angwe, who inaugurated the committee, noted that most people were not aware of the existence of certain laws.
Angwe said as a result, when they contravened such laws, it became difficult to punish them.
According to him, Nigerians are not aware of legislations or provisions of most statutes because such statutes are not readily available for Nigerians to access.

“Even though ignorance of the law is not an excuse, different versions of laws enacted by na natiol and state legislature in Nigeria are offered for sale, and indeed, being sold to unsuspecting members of the public by street hawkers.
“The publications come from unauthorised sources, thereby placing ordinary citizens at risk of misdirection.’’
The Chairman of the Committee, Prof. Yemi Akinseye-George (SAN), appealed to Nigerians to cooperate with the committee in the cause of its assignment.
Akinseye-George assured Nigerians that members of the committee would do their best in identifying all the problems and also point the way forward.
He said that the laws bind every Nigerian and as such efforts should be made toward ensuring easy access of these legislations to every Nigerian. (NAN)
