LAGOS – The Nigeria Paralympics Committee (NPC) on Wednesday reiterated its commitment to providing an enabling environment for the development of para-sports.
The President of the NPC, Monday Emoghawva, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that measures were already in place to enhance the skills of physically challenged athletes.
He said that such measures included organisation of regular competitions.
Emoghawve said that the competitions were also targeted at discovering young talents.
“Our aim in NPC is to increase the profile of para-sports in Nigeria, and we can only achieve this by doing the needful.[eap_ad_2]
“We intend to improve our athletes’ skills by engaging them more in competitions both at home and outside the country.
“We want to use the medium to discover budding talents that will take over from the ageing ones,’’ he said.
Emoghawve disclosed that the body had released funds to all its federations.
He urged them to source for funds to complement what NPC had given them to organise programmes.
The president said that the NPC was working closely with the National Sports Commission (NSC) to achieve its objective of promoting para-sports.
He noted that para-sports had won medals for the country at various international competitions over the years due to adequate support from the NSC.
“We have won more medals for the country than the able body sports; this would have been impossible without the support of the NSC over the years.
“I hope our cordial relationship with the NSC will be a continuous one,’’ he said.
He appealed to corporate organisations and individuals to complement government effort in meaningfully engaging physically challenged persons through participation in sports. (NAN)[eap_ad_3]
