ante-natal care to avoid obstetric complications during delivery.
Babatunde, who is a physician at the National Hospital, Abuja, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday.
According to him, adequate monitoring of pregnancy will prevent a woman from having premature or [pro_ad_display_adzone id=”10″]prolonged pregnancy.
“A normal pregnancy lasts for approximately 40 weeks; premature birth medically is a baby being born earlier than 37 weeks of pregnancy.
“Women with multiple pregnancies most times are delivered prematurely due to the over extension of the uterus and a lot of medical problems associated with their delivery.
“Prolonged pregnancy also known as post-term is one that extends beyond 42 weeks. The chance of prolonged pregnancy is common in women that had it before,’’ Babatunde said.
He said for prolonged pregnancy there were chances of stillbirth or infant death.
“Ante-natal is a serious factor for a woman that is pregnant. They should go for their clinics and book early so that they can be supervised properly.
“Premature delivery babies are usually kept in Special Care Baby Unit for proper monitoring.
“The babies are expose to some complications like low sugar level, jaundice and sometimes might not to be well formed.
“Others could be low temperature and respiratory stress syndrome problems,” the gynaecologist said.
Babatunde also advised pregnant women to consult their doctor any time they had issues with their health, warning that self medication was dangerous. (NAN)
