LAGOS – Olatunbosun Johnson, former coordinator of Rugby Grassroots Development, Lagos State, on Sunday promised that the second Sandie Beach Rugby competition billed for Dec. 27, would be exciting.
Johnson told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the competition would hold at the Vertigo Lounge, Elegushi Beach, Lekki.
According to him, teams will be made up of five players and two reserve players.
He said that admission would be open to the general public to participate in the one-day event.
“Sandie Beach Rugby is an annual event designed for the rugby community, to showcase the game to the general public, as well as celebrate the festive season as a family.
“The maiden edition was a success and this year’s edition promises to be an action-packed, fun-filled, and educative day, with lots of prizes too be won,” he said.
Johnson, who is also the coach of Racing Rugby Football Club, Lagos said that the sport was unpopular because it was criticised by those who do not understand its core values.
According to him, the sport is suffering from prejudice, lack of understanding and awareness, as Nigerians tend to judge the sport as barbaric, without trying to understand it.
Johnson, however, said that the sport was fantastic, with qualities such as discipline, self-restraint, patience and harmony embedded in its practice.
“It preaches hard work, team work, respect, self-development, camaraderie and a lot more that you need to experience, to understand it.
“Rugby is not just a fantastic sport; it is a way of life. Its principles on and off the pitch make it a gentleman’s game,” he said.
Johnson called on well-meaning, sports-loving Nigerians to come out en masse and support the development of the sport by making donations for the success of the competition. (NAN)
