Abuja -Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), has advised fleet operators in Nigeria to engage certified safety managers in their operations.
Oyeyemi gave advice on Wednesday in Abuja at a strategic session organised by the FRSC for fleet operators across the country.
Represented by Ojeme Ewhrudjakpor, Deputy Corps Marshal, Technical Services and Special Duties department, Oyeyemi said that transport safety managers certified by the FRSC always adhere to safety norms in their places of work.
“It is not enough for an organisation to acquire fleet of vehicles for its operation; it is also important to ensure that certified safety manager oversees the condition of both the vehicles and the drivers.
“FRSC certified safety managers will always ensure that vehicles are fixed with valid spare parts such as tyres, which have expiry dates.
“Private vehicle owners equally need to be safety conscious, but fleet operators need to do more in that regard because they have more vehicles and carry more passengers.
“Fleet operators should therefore ensure that their transport section is led by certified safety managers in order to reduce their losses and contribute to safety on our roads,” he said.
In his remark, Mr Kayode Olagunju, Assistant Corps Marshal and Head, department of Policy, Research and Statistics, said that neglect and inefficiency of fleet management had its cost on fleet operations.
“There must be adherence to standards in order to enhance functional and safe transport system in the country.

“Most of the road accidents witnessed lately could have been averted if those involved give premium to safety standards of vehicle maintenance,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), recalls that FRSC usually organise training on safety for transport managers in the six geo-political zones.
Some of the participants, who spoke to newsmen at the end of the session, said the workshop was timely and enlightening especially, as haulage crashes had been on the increase in the last few months. (NAN)
