ODUKPANI – Some members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Friday embarked on a clean-up exercise to avert flooding in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River.
The corps members belong to the Community Development Service (CDS) group on Environment and Beautification.
The President of the group, Mr Frank Ojeh, said that the exercise was imperative as the rains have started.
“The rains have already started; if we clean our gutters and remove all the dirt, the water channels will be free to allow the flow of water and this will eliminate flooding.
“This exercise is also meant to remind the public of certain values, especially those concerning environmental cleanliness.”
Another member of the group, Ms. Charity Odey, said that the main task of the group was to keep the environment clean, healthy and safe.
Odey, therefore, appealed to the residents not to dump refuse in water ways, to avoid flooding.
An official of the NYSC, Ms. Blessing Bisong, commended the corps members for their initiative, underscoring the saying that “cleanliness is next to godliness”.
The Youth Leader in the area, Mr Godwin Etim, who also commended the efforts of the group, added that the exercise would go a long way to prevent flooding in the area.
A cross section of motorists and residents who spoke with the NAN, also appreciated the efforts of the corps members. (NAN)
