Enugu – The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) on Saturday stated that its Post Graduate Diploma in Education programme was responsible for the excellent performance of teachers in Enugu State.
The Coordinator of the council in the state, Mrs Nneka Onyebuchi, made the assertion in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu.
She said that the programme had offered many teachers in the state an opportunity to benefit from the Basic Teachers’ Standardisation scheme in the state.
Onyebuchi said that virtually all institutions in the state, both government and privately-owned, had keyed into the standardisation programme of the council.
The coordinator noted that the council’s massive sensitisation on standardisation made most of the private schools to upgrade their teachers, especially those without education background.
“TRCN massive sensitisation on standardisation had been instrumental to the high quality of teachers in Enugu State as well as teachers seeing the need to go for teaching refresher courses after some years.
“Today, the State Government, I mean the state’s ministry of education, cannot do without requiring its new teaching employees to provide TRCN registration, certification and induction.
“While in private primary, secondary and tertiary institutions, we have recorded overwhelming successes in them even to the extent that institutions on their own have to compel and do bulk registration for their teachers to be upgraded,’’ she said.

The coordinator noted that TRCN had established teachers’ investigation panel in all states to investigate allegations, complaints and petitions on the conduct of teachers.
“This panel had been instrumental to mopping-up existing unregistered teacher in the state, thus checking quacks or those who want to take advantage of the profession.
“And, it submits its findings to the Teachers’ Arbitration Panel in Abuja for legal sanction or any other reprimand actions against any defaulter as the case may be,’’ she added.
Onyebuchi, who lauded the Federal Government’s teachers’ employment plan, added: “as always, we would make sure that the would-be teachers are qualified with prerequisite standard’’.
According to her, the move shows the deep concern the Federal Government has to meeting the minimum standard of teacher to pupils/students ratio in the country. (NAN)
