ABUJA – No fewer than 877 librarians were on Tuesday in Abuja inducted into the Librarian Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN).
The Registrar, Dr Victoria Okogie, who performed the ceremony, said the council had so far registered 4,141 librarians since its inception in 1995.
Okogie urged the inductees to deploy their expertise for national growth and transformation.
“As information managers, the society looks up to you for quick, current and quality information that is useful in addressing challenges and meeting its needs, even during emergencies.
“As you go back to your various institutions, there must be a clear-cut improvement in your service delivery capabilities as a testimony to this certification.
“When that is achieved, our noble profession — Librarianship — will attract more respect from all and sundry.’’
According to her, the council will continue to contribute its quota towards ensuring that the library and information science sector delivers maximum impact on education and learning.
She stated that information was regarded as the fourth sector of production, adding that Nigerian librarians must embrace e-learning and e-library.
In his remarks, the Minister of State for Education, Mr Nyesom Wike, said that efforts were ongoing to reform public libraries for efficient services. [eap_ad_1] Wike urged the inductees to embrace new literacy skills in order to serve their community and fit into the digital age.
“Librarians should actively engage in training the community on e-governance services now that elections are fast approaching.
“People must be aware of the activities of the government and their responsibilities towards good governance.’’
The minister advised the inductees to always demonstrate professional discipline by observing all the codes of librarianship.
One of the inductees, Mr Oni Osahemin, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that he would strive to contribute towards revolutionalising e-library in Nigeria.
According to him, every book should be made available online for easy access anywhere in the world. (NAN)
