The accused, aged 30, is standing trial on a one-count charge of drug trafficking.
At the resumed hearing, an officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr Abdullahi Idris, reviewed the facts of the case.
He was led in evidence by the Prosecutor, Mr Aliyu Abubakar.
Idris told the court that he was an Exhibit Keeper attached to the Seme Special Area Command of the NDLEA.
He said that the accused was caught by the command’s patrol team on the Seme-Badagry expressway with 10.2kg of the illicit drug.
The exhibit keeper said that on Feb. 19, the patrol team brought the accused to his office with the substance.
He told the court that the accused made a confessional statement which was written in the English language.
Idris told the court that it was an officer of the NDLEA, Mr Afolabi Kurya, that recorded the statement, on behalf of the accused.
He said that the substance tested positive to hemp at the NDLEA forensic laboratory.
The prosecutor, however, tendered the statement of the accused, the bulk of the drug evidence, a certificate of drug analysis and the big envelope containing the analysed drug.
Justice Mohammed Yunusa, admitted the exhibit as evidence, except the statement of the accused.
Counsel to the accused, Mr Adiel Afarah, had opposed the admissibility of the statement of the accused.
He said that the body of the statement showed that a man by name Onyekachi Onwuzuruike, recorded the statement for the accused and not Afolabi Kurya, as testified by the witness.
Yunusa, consequently, adjourned the case till May 16, for continuation of the review of the facts of the case.
The accused was arraigned on April 17 and he pleaded guilty to the charge.
The prosecutor had told the court that the accused committed the alleged offence on Feb. 19 at the Gbaji checking point on the Seme-Badagry expressway.
He said that the alleged offence contravened Section 11 (a) of the NDLEA Act, Cap 30, Laws of the Federation, 2004.
NAN reports that drug trafficking could attract life imprisonment, upon conviction. (NAN)
