An anti-corruption court in Indonesia has sentenced a Constitutional Court judge, Patrialis Akbar to eight years in prison for allegedly receiving bribe worth $10,000.
The court sitting in Jakarta, on Monday found Akbar guilty of receiving the bribe from a meat importer.
Prosecutors told the court that the alleged bribe was meant to influence the outcome of a judicial review on the livestock and animal health law.
Akbar was the second Constitutional Court judge to be jailed for corruption.
A five-member panel of judges ruled that Akbar was guilty of the alleged crime and was consequently convicted.
The Indonesia’s anti-corruption police said Akbar was caught “red handed” in an anti-graft sting in January.
Akbar, a law and human rights minister under former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, however, denied any wrongdoing.
The meat importer, Basuki Hariman, was earlier sentenced to seven years in prison and his secretary Ng Fay received five years.
The judges said Akbar received $10,000 in expenses to perform minor hajj and about $300 for golf expenses.
The panel also fined Akbar $22,500 or a further three months in prison. Dailypost report.
