MARARABA – A Senior Magistrates’ Court in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, on Thursday, ordered that a garbage collector, 25-year-old Ibrahim Isa of Nyanya, FCT, be remanded in prison custody.

The Senior Magistrate, Mr Iliya Aku, gave the order after the accused person pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge of extortion brought against him.

Aku, who denied bail to the accused person, said the offence of extortion was not a bailable offence and adjourned hearing in the case until July 7.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Cpl. Steven Kwaza, had told the court that one Victoria Ebam of Jikwoyi, FCT, reported the matter at the Sani Abacha Road Police Station, Mararaba, on June 12.

Kwaza said that on the same date, the accused person attacked the complainant with a cutlass and snatched her handbag containing N40,000 and some complimentary cards.

“The accused person, Ibrahim Isa was arrested immediately and the handbag was recovered from him,’’ Kwaza said.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 293 of the Penal Code. (NAN
