Court remands man for alleged N250,000 Russian visa fraud

Abuja    –     A Karu Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, on Wednesday ordered the remand of a 33-year-old man, Luke Chidozie, in prison, for allegedly duping a client of N250,000.

The judge, Abdulmajeed Oniyani, who ordered for the remand, adjourned the case until July 4, for hearing of the bail application and trial.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Vincent Osuji, told the court that one Uche Anugwa of Mararaba, Nasarawa State, reported the matter at the Karu Police Station, Abuja, on May 3, at about 11:a.m.

“The complainant alleged that sometime in June 2017, the defendant defrauded him of the sum of N250,000 under false presence of assisting him to procure a Russian visa.

“After entrusting the said money to him, the defendant failed to procure the visa as agreed and converted the money into his personal use.

“In the course of police investigation, the defendant was released on police administrative bail with an instruction to report back to the police station for further necessary action.

“The defendant, however, failed to report as instructed until June 11, 2018, when he was tracked and rearrested,” Osuji said.

He said the offences contravened Sections 312, 322, 309 and 136 of the Penal Code.

Osuji requested for adjournment to enable him prepare for the case.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the four-count charge of criminal breach of trust, cheating, misappropriation and disobedience of an order from a public servant.
