An Isheri Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Friday remanded a man who allegedly defrauded church members in the guise of being a repented armed robber who needed support.
The court remanded 27-year-old Owofosafa Samuel in the Ikoyi Prisons following his guilty plea.
Samuel, who has no fixed address, was charged on one count.
The prosecutor, Insp Nurudeen Thomas, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Oct. 22, at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Ogudu, Ojota, Lagos, at 4.30p.m.
He said that the accused was in the habit of going to churches to claim that he was a repented armed robber, who needed financial support.
“However, the arms of the law caught up with him when he met Mr Adejare Falana after service.
“Falana, instead of giving alms, called the police. It was then that Samuel confessed that he had never been an armed robber,” Thomas said.
He said the offence contravened Section 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The section prescribes 15 years imprisonment for obtaining by false pretences.
The court adjourned the case to November 1 for review of facts and sentencing.
