Justice Yetunde Pinheiro of the Ikeja High Court has postponed delivering a judgment in the lawsuit filed by Mudashiru Obasa, the reinstated Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Obasa is challenging the legality of his initial removal from office.
The case has drawn significant attention as it revolves around allegations of fraud, abuse of office, high-handedness, and gross misconduct, which led to Obasa’s removal as Speaker.
Justice Pinheiro decided to delay the ruling after listening to 15 preliminary applications submitted by the respondents. These applications were presented by the defence team, which includes some members of the Lagos State House of Assembly and former Speaker Mojisola Meranda.
Following the hearing, the judge announced that a date for the judgment would be communicated to all parties later.
At the start of the proceedings, Obasa’s lawyer, Prof. Joshua Olatoke (SAN), urged the court to take jurisdiction over the case. He argued that the assembly’s decision on January 13, when lawmakers met during a recess, was not valid. He pointed out that neither Obasa nor the majority leader received proper notice. Olatoke stressed that the majority leader had the authority to reconvene any legislative session during a recess.
