Abuja – The Committee of FCT Imams Initiative (CFII), on Thursday, donated food items to Muslim faithful in the six area councils of the FCT.
The Chairman of the association, Alhaji Tajudeen Adigun, said that the measure was meant to ease the sufferings of the less-privileged, especially with the lockdown in the FCT due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that President Muhammadu Buhari had, on Sunday, announced the lockdown of the FCT, Lagos and Ogun states to curtail the spread of Coronavirus.
Adigun, who led other imams to supervise the distribution of the relief materials in the area councils, said that the committee intended to get to the grassroots through their respective imams.
He told NAN that 30 bags of rice, cartoons of groundnut oil, condiments and cash tokens were distributed to the six area councils.
“The committee is distributing these food items to the six area councils in the FCT to assist the less-privileged in these trying times.
“We pray Allah will save the country from this virus and other vices too, because the situation has affected all sectors of the economy and social life,” he said.
The Chief Imam of Kuje Central Mosque, Hussein Lawan, thanked the committee for the gesture and promised to distribute the items to the poorest of the poor.
In his remarks, Mallam Said Ishaq, Secretary, League of Imams in Kuje, enjoined all Muslim faithful to obey the stay-at-home order and continue to pray to Allah for the country to overcome the pandemic.
“I want to use this medium to remind us that Prophet Muhammad says in an authentic Hadith that whenever there is a pandemic, everybody should stay at home.
“We should also obey health officials and constituted authorities; in fact, the issue of hand washing is part of the virtues of Islam, especially at this time,” he said.
NAN reports that the imams of various area councils were urged to continue to enlighten the public on the need for basic hygiene and social distancing to win the fight against the Coronavirus pandemic. (NAN)
