Birnin Kebbi – The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kebbi Council, has advised its members in the state to ensure they apply all preventive measures to reduce the spread of the Coronavirus.
The council gave the advice in a statement by its Chairman, Mr Aliyu Jajirma, in Birnin Kebbi on Friday.
Jajirma said the advice became necessary in view of the fact that some journalists were negating the standards rules to curtail the spread of the virus.
He said: “The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kebbi State Council, has strongly appealed to journalists to ensure that they use face marks and to apply all other means of preventive measures aimed at reducing the spread of COVID-19.
“As at last week, Kebbi had recorded the first index of Coronavirus since the outbreak and it is battling to ensure that no further spread occurs.’’
He stressed the need for journalists to lead by example through adhering strictly to rules such as social distancing and wearing of face masks during functions to encourage other people to do so.
“The council is not unmindful of the fact that some journalists have been infected in the process of reporting cases of the virus in some parts of the country.
“Therefore, henceforth, a journalist who is contravening the rules might be sanctioned or barred during public functions,’’ the chairman warned.
He commended the state government and Kebbi Development Forum (KDF) for their efforts in combating the virus as well as sensitising the people of the state.
