Lagos – Mr Fatai Owoseni, the Commissioner of Police (CP), Lagos State Command has frowned at the attitude of some policemen who see the Force as an opportunity to make fast money.
The CP said this while addressing newsmen, Area Commanders and officers and men of Divisional Police Stations in Lagos on Tuesday.
“Some of you just sit in your office thinking of how to make filthy money or invade people’s privacy all in the name of getting internet fraudsters.
“Money earned from filthy means will be spent on sickness and if spent on building house, it will collapse.
“Imbibe the culture of domestic policing. The more the country knows we are irresponsible, the more the people will clamour to do away with us.
“How can you claim to be friend of the people but terrorise them every day,’’ the visibly angry CP said.
The CP condemned misconduct and indiscipline among some policemen, expressing dissatisfaction with what he described as “act of irresponsibility’’ by some policemen.
Owoseni, who recalled an incident where a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) allegedly shot someone to death at Ijeshatedo area of Lagos and other irresponsible acts of policemen, said it had caused him much pain.
“It gives me so much pain when I have to meet with families of those unjustly killed by the police.
“I spend most of my time cleaning up the mess you have created. If you know the heat is too much for you in Lagos, you can apply for transfer.
“If there is any act of indiscipline within your jurisdiction, don’t let me come for you, just call the DC that you are coming for redeployment.
“I cannot continue to shoulder your irresponsibility. We may not be able to do enough for you but let us be responsible with this job,’’ Owoseni said.
The CP also advised the DPOs to see themselves as spiritual leaders, who should set examples in their dealings.
He also urged them to take the responsibility to correct any form of indiscipline witnessed among their officers.
