Hadejia – The Consumer Protection Committe (CPC) in Jigawa has appealed to traders in the state to desist from selling adulterated items to consumers.
The Chairman of the committee, Alhaji Farouq Abdallah, made the appeal while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Hadejia, Jigawa.
The chairman warned that any trader found selling unwholesome products, in whatever guise, would be prosecuted.
He said that he hoped that those jailed for committing such an offence would serve as deterrent to other dubious traders in the state.
“They should know that our intelligent officers are everywhere and will surely report defaulters for punishment,” he said
He reiterated that a trader who was recently found in possession of three bags of adulterated pepper, was sentenced to eight months in jail, by a Sharia Court in Taura Local Government Area of the state.
He said the trader was found concealing bags of rotten pepper mixed with good ones in an attempt to shortchange unsuspecting customers in the area.
Abdallah said the bags of rotten pepper worth N66, 000 had since been destroyed by the council by the directive of the court.
Consumer Protection Council is the apex consumer protection agency in Nigeria established to improve the well-being of the people.
