CALABAR (Sundiata Post) – A traditional ruler in the Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State, Etiyin Maurice Edet, has been abducted by some gunmen, who invaded his residence on Sunday night.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that an aide to the traditional ruler was shot dead in the process of kidnapping.
The spokesperson for the state police command, Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident but said details were still sketchy as of press time.
However, a source in the community told NAN that the monarch’s aide was killed for attempting to resist the kidnap of his principal.
Meanwhile, Prof Patrick Egaga of the University of Calabar has been released by his abductors after 26 days in captivity.
Egaga, who is the varsity’s Director of Servicom, was abducted in the institution’s staff quarters. The abductors demanded N50m as ransom for his release.
NAN reports that Calabar and its environs have, in the past two months, witnessed many cases of kidnapping, with lecturers, lawyers, medical doctors, clergymen, and high-profile individuals being the target.
