ABUJA (Sundiata Post) – Former Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Dr. Mike Omeri, has attributed the underdevelopment of Nigeria’s democracy to bad governance and injustice. As the nation marks 25 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, Omeri emphasized the need for Nigeria to move away from these negative tendencies to foster democratic growth.
In his 2024 Democracy Day message sent on Thursday, Omeri called for the entrenchment of political norms and upholding the vision of the nation’s founding members. He advocated for justice for all Nigerians, stressing the importance of collective resilience and steadfastness in sustaining democratic governance despite the mismanagement of national resources.
“The commemoration of Democracy Day must go beyond a day in our calendar,” Omeri stated. “It should serve as an auspicious opportunity for those responsible for governing the country to reflect on the resilience, strength, and unwavering spirit of our heroes who have sacrificed to establish and sustain democracy.”
Omeri lamented the misplacement of opportunities and cautioned against wastage and manipulation by a privileged few. He stressed the urgent need for the present administration to reflect on the sacrifices made for democracy and to ensure that citizens enjoy freedom of choice, access to justice, and the rule of law.
“As we mark 25 years of uninterrupted civil rule in Nigeria, we salute the courage and determination of those who paved the way for democratic governance,” he said. “We must continue to honor their memory and uphold the principles they stood for, ensuring that our resources benefit all and provide opportunities for participation in economic activities.”
Describing democracy as a continuous journey requiring the participation and vigilance of every citizen, the PDP front-line member encouraged Nigerians not to lose hope. “We have the capacity and strength to overcome challenges that hinder our progress and strive towards a more inclusive, equitable, and prosperous society,” he added.
Omeri called on the people of Nasarawa State to remain steadfast in their commitment to democratic ideals of unity, peace, and development. He stressed the importance of tolerance and mutual respect to navigate the challenges ahead.
“In Nasarawa State, we must strive harder to redeem the significant strides that are fast eluding us,” he urged. “By standing firm, strengthening our democratic institutions, and ensuring active participation of all citizens in the democratic process, I have no doubt that our people will remain genuinely committed to our collective resolve for a better future.”
