Dutse – The Director of Sports, Jigawa State Sports Council, Gambo Umar, has advised the new Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung to put in place policies that would promote sports development at the grassroots.
Umar, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Dalung should come up with policies that would lead to discovery of talents at the grassroots from various zone in the country.
The director further tasked the minister on the provision of sporting facilities across the country.
“I believe that the new minister has a lot of interest in youth and youth development.
“So he should use his experience to promote grassroots sports development in the country,” he said.
According to him, youth many Nigerian youth are interested in sports, but lack or non existence of sporting facilities hinder development of sports in the country.
Umar urged the minister to also encourage age group competitions in rural communities.
He said that competitions organise from the grassroots would snowball into discovery of talents.
Umar said that competitions were the main avenues through which young and new talents could be discovered.
The director of sports said that corporate bodies also have a role to play to ensure nurturing of talents discovered from the grassroots through funding and sponsorship of competitions.
According to him, the gesture was to make sporting activities more attractive to youth, particularly in rural areas.

He said engaging the youth in sporting activities would also enable the nation provide the platform for youth empowerment.(NAN)
