Lagos – The Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society says the success of Nigeria‘s diversification of the economy will require transparency, focus, and the political will.
The President of the society, Prof. Gbenga Okunlola, who made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos, urged the Federal Government to begin the drive towards diversification from the oil and gas sector.
Okunkola said that the Buhari administration was doing well in its efforts to re-orientate Nigerians, adding that with transparency in the sector, a lot could be achieved in terms of opening up the economy.
“First thing is transparency, two focus, three political will, today, Nigeria has a lot of resources.
“The oil and gas, yes the price is going down but it is circle, it may come up again but even then what we should understand, you we can diversify even within the oil and gas industry.
“Especially the downstream, so many things you can produce from refined oil that can help our industry, for the plastics, for road construction and even the gas.

“So we have not even yet started harnessing our gas, and Nigeria is more gas rich than oil rich.
“So those three things are essential and by the time we do that we would be up there.
“I want to thank the President he is already handling it well, we can see what is happening, anybody who now wants to just go and be corrupt would have to think twice because they are being exposed.
“That is the beginning, and then it also has to be in the psyche of every Nigerian that you need to stop corruption
“If the psyche of the average Nigerian is taken care of, and we all have this moral right to live without corruption, then it would be okay.’’
