ABUJA – Dr Humphrey Aniebo of the FCT Public Health Department FCT has called on Nigerians to ensure that they go for malaria test before commencing any treatment.
Aniebo, who is the Programme Manager of the FCT Elimination Programme, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
He said that undertaking malaria test before treatment would help prevent, diagnose, control and treat malaria when detected.
The programme manager said to eliminate malaria, the department had trained some health personnel to help in the control of malaria, noting that not all fever cases were malaria.
He also said a group of health personnel such as doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory scientists, monitoring and evaluation officers, also had on-the-job training to handle such cases.
“These people are expected to go round the health facilities in FCT and retrain health personnel on the issues of malaria prevention, diagnosis, treatment and control. [eap_ad_1] He said that the training for sub-recipients and principal-recipient of global fund round eight was held in Akwanga, Nasarawa State.
Aniebo explained that the essence of the programme was also to look at January to July 2014 progress update of the implementation that has been done.
“It is also to do disbursement recess for new funding, look at all data submitted for review and ensure that malaria elimination programme is in progress and achieving its objectives.
“In year 2000, malaria prevalence was between 50 per cent and 90 per cent, while from year 2000 to 2005 it was 10 per cent and 50 per cent,’’ he said.
He, however, said from year 2005 to 2010, zero per cent to 40 per cent prevalence was recorded.
Aniebo explained that these statistics could be further ascertained if people go for a test before commencing treatment of malaria based on symptoms. (NAN)
