LAFIA – Prof. Shehu AbdulRahman, the Vice Chancellor, Federal University, Gashua, Yobe, has identified poor agricultural technology, poor utilisation of agricultural produce, lack of access to land as factors responsible for food insecurity globally.
AdbulRahman, a professor of Agricultural Economics, stated this on Wednesday in Lafia during a paper presentation on “The Role of Youths in Promoting Food Security in Nigeria”.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the programme was organised by the students of Faculty of Agriculture, Lafia campus of Nasarawa state University, Keffi.
He called on Nigerians, especially the youths, to develop more interest in farming and go back to the farm to fight food insecurity and boost the socio-economic development of the country.
“As we are all aware that no society can live comfortably, survive without agriculture; agriculture is the major source of livelihood of every family, nation and its importance cannot be overemphasised to the development of any society.
“Agriculture fight unemployment, poverty, hunger and agriculture also boost the revenue base of any nation, and I urge all of us not to relent in our efforts in boosting agricultural production in the country for the benefit of all.
“Some of the problems of food insecurity globally include poor agricultural technology, poor utilisation of agricultural produce, lack of access to land, unwillingness of people, youths to go to farm and inadequate farming training, among others.

“I want to tell you that lack of food security will create another form of human insecurity because people are hungry, there is poverty, unemployment, among others, and there is the need for all hands to be on deck to boost food production in the country,” he said.
According to him, any nation that does not have a sustainable food security would face crisis of any source.
The don urged nations to take agriculture as a pride in order to fight poverty, hunger, unemployment and to boost its socio-economic activities.
He called on the government at all levels to address the problems of food insecurity in order not only to boost food production but also to improve on its revenue base and improve the standard of living of its citizenry.
The vice chancellor commended the students for organising the programme and called on them to be hard working towards achieving self dependence in their interest and in the interest of the country.
On his part, the Chairman of the event, Dr Mohammed Salihu, stressed the need for Nigerians to develop more interest in farming in order to tackle food insecurity and to fight poverty and unemployment in the country.
Salihu, who is the Provost, College of Agriculture, Lafia, enjoined the students to take their studies with seriousness and called on them to shun examination malpractice, cultism and all forms of violence in order to excel in life.
Earlier, the students union President of the faculty, Mr Sule Kana, appreciated the dignitaries for providing solutions to the problems of food insecurity in the country.
He said that the lessons learned would enable the students and Nigerians embrace agriculture in order to boost food production so as to ensure food sufficiency in the country. (NAN)
