GWAGWALADA – Prof. Michael Asuzu of the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan, on Thursday tasked the Nigeria Medical Students Association (NMSA) to concentrate more on preventing health-related diseases than curing them.
Asuzu gave the advice in Gwagwalada, Abuja, during the 2014 National Health Week ceremony organised by the association.
The ceremony was held at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH).
“We advise students not to depart from the practice of our medical fore-fathers.
“Students should emphasis prevention of health-related diseases rather than cure,’’ he said.
Asuzu, who was represented by Dr Yalma Msheliza, Consultant, Community Physician, UATH, said it had been observed that many of the medical students specialised in curing diseases rather than preventing them.
“This was not the concept of medicine left for us by our for-father, prevention is cheaper and more sustainable than cure.
“Medical students should not only concentrate on doctor-patient relationship but doctor-population relationship.
“They should design programmes that will affect the entire community rather than one doctor to one patient,’’ he said.
Mr Eche Ugochukwu, the National President, NMSA, urged government to improve the education of medical students to produce quality doctors. (NAN) [eap_ad_3]
