Enugu – A don, Prof. Chubah Ezeh, has appealed to economic saboteurs in Nigeria to rethink their activities in the interest of citizens and progress of the nation.
Ezeh, who is a professor of political-economy at the Anambra State University, Igbariam, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Monday.
The don was speaking against the background of the economic downturn and violent agitations in parts of the country.
According to him, the situation is depriving the country of huge export earnings from crude oil and other exports.
“The situation is very precarious and very regrettable.
“The consequences are obvious; the already battered economy is further being battered.
“And Nigeria is a mono-economy state (depending majorly on oil export).
“The implication is that time is gradually coming, if not drastically checked, soonest when Nigeria will have nothing as it would rake in into her Federal coffers.
“And then, the further implication would be compounding the poverty indices.
“Of course, there are numerous agitations going on across the country.
“The Federal Government is now overwhelmed with the plethora of demands and expectations from various components of the federating entities.
“The reason being, number one, the mal-handling of the Nigerian equation – a federal system in a unitary fiscal system.
“You claim in theory to be running a federal system; when in practice what you have is a unitary system of government
Ezeh commended the Federal Government for using dialogue to address grievances and conflicts in the country. (NAN)
