Lagos – The Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule, on Tuesday said parents should not to leave the responsibility of child upbringing to teachers alone.
Adebule made the call at the ongoing Science, Arts and Craft Exhibition organised by the Ministry of Education as part of activities to celebrate Lagos at 50 in Lagos.
Students from public and private primary, junior and senior secondary schools showcased their initiatives at the exhibition held in Education Districts II, III and IV, in Ketu, Lagos Island and Surulere respectively.
She said that the busy schedule of parents had made many of them to ignore their duties in bringing up their children, leaving it to teachers.
According to her, the teachers and parents’ role of nurturing children should complement each other.
”If parents are able to recover their pride in being the primary educators of their children, many things will change for the better for the families and for the society at large,” she said.
Adebule said the exhibition was to discover the skills and talents of the students, aside academics, to help them nurture the talents for a better future.
”We want these children who will take over from us in the next 50 years to be better equipped and prepared as responsible and skillful citizens.
”The time to groom, nurture and skillfully equip our children for the future is now,” the deputy governor said.
Some of the projects on display were Ankara craft, shoe making, bead making, drawings and paintings, crotchetting, tye and dye, costume jewellery and others.
The grand finale of the exhibition comes up on May 23, with awards and prizes given to the best schools.
