LAGOS – Project Rescue Democracy (ORD), a coalition of Civil Society, Self-Determination, Ethnic and Professional Groups, on Saturday advised INEC to ensure that the general election hold on March 28 and April 11.
The ORD Secretary, Ms Titi Akosi gave the advice while addressing newsmen in Lagos.
Akosi said if there must be a further shift in the date for the elections, it should only be in the places directly embroiled in uncontrollable crisis or war.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) shifted the presidential elections earlier scheduled for Feb. 14 and 28.
The INEC had said this was due to the advice of security chiefs..
Akosi said that the new dates must remain sacrosanct.
“We demand that INEC adhere strictly to the provisions of the Electoral Act and the 1999 constitution empowering it to uphold the sanctity of the new dates.’’
Akosi said the group was opposed to any tinkering with the current electoral process and that the May 29 handover date must be upheld to avoid constitutional crisis that might implode the system.
She noted that the proliferation of arms, armed conflicts and orchestrated crisis in some parts of the nation where geared towards heating up the polity.

“We call on all Nigerians to ensure that they collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) which is the only guaranteed passport to vote on Election Day for a candidate of their choice.
“We are not unmindful of the pains and tragedy of the June 12, 1993 debacle and pray that we may not walk that path again,’’ the ORD scribe said.(NAN)
