Ibadan -A former Minister of Sports, Prof. Taoheed Adedoja, says he is opposed to the scrapping of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
Adedoja, who is also the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa, said this on Wednesday in an interview with newsmen in Ibadan.
He described calls by some Nigerians for the scrapping of the examination body as “very unfortunate.’’
Adedoja, who said that many people were not adequately informed about the mandate of JAMB, added that the body was established to streamline the process of admission in the country.
The former minister said that the best approach to the admission problem was the review of the situation and creation of synergy with the institutions.
“In the last 10 years commutatively, only 15 per cent of prospective students could get access to university education.
“I think what is happening to JAMB is that the people are not adequately informed on the mandate of JAMB.
“The unfortunate thing is that anytime an institution is having a problem in this country, Nigerians will quickly call for the scrapping of such institution.
“We are just looking at JAMB alone as an issue but the issue is all about the entire education sector.
“The best thing we can do is to continue to review the situation,’’ he said.

He urged the Federal Government to assist private tertiary institutions, saying the private sector as a major driver of the economy needed to play a vital role in the education sector. (NAN)
