FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed has extolled the qualities of a former Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili describing her as a relentless and fearless Amazon. He praised her for doing a lot to raise the bar for better women participation in public service through her sterling contributions to national development.
In his condolence message made available to SundiataPOST, Senator Bala Mohammed expressed shock over Prof. Akunyili’s death, stressing that it was a huge loss to Nigeria. “She was fiercely committed to service of the nation through all the capacities that she served. She would be dearly missed by Nigeria and Nigerians. Her exit is not only a loss to her family but to the entire country,” he mourned.
The FCT Minister while recalling the contributions of the late Minister as a delegate to the ongoing Constitutional Conference, described her as an accomplished administrator and intellectual who remained courageous and determined till she drew her last breathe. According to him, she first earned respect and national recognition for her great achievements as the Director-General of NAFDAC and latter as a minister of Information and Communications.
The FCT Minister said the late Professor Akunyili set a worthy example in selfless service when she took the war against counterfeit drugs to Onitsha, the commercial nerve centre of her home state, Anambra against all odds.
He added, “During her lifetime, through her steadfastness, transparency and vision, she inspired several women to stand tall and aspire for greater opportunities in the politics, public service and governance of their fatherland. She was indeed a worthy ambassador of the womenfolk.”
