CAPE TOWN – South Africa’s murder rate has increased by 5 per cent over the past year, National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega, said on Friday.
Phiyega said this during a media briefing in Pretoria, adding that there were 17,068 murders last year, an increase of 800, while attempted murder increased by 4.6 per cent.
“In addition, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm increased by 1.5 per cent and robbery with aggravated circumstances was up by 12.7 per cent. [eap_ad_2] “There was a small consolation in sexual offences, including rape, which decreased by 5.6 per cent.
“While bank robberies had decreased by 77.4 per cent over a five-year period but increased from seven incidents in 2012 to to 21 in 2013,” he said.
According to the commissioner, hijackings saw a 12.3 per cent increase; truck hijacking a 12.1 per cent increase; robbery a 13.7 per cent increase, and robbery in residential areas a 7.4 per cent increase.
