Abuja – A Wuse Zone 6 Chief Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, on Monday sentenced a driver, Abdulraham Idris, to 60 days imprisonment for attempting to vandalise government’s installations.
Idris of Jabi Masalanchi, Abuja, had pleaded guilty to a count charge of attempt to vandalise government’s installations and begged for leniency.
Magistrate Aminu Eri, who convicted Idris, however, gave him N20,000 option of fine.
Eri said the punishment would serve as deterrent to others.
The prosecutor, Fidelis Ogbobe, had following the plea of the convict, urged the court to try him summarily in line with Section 112(8) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act ( ACJA), 2015.
Ogbobe told the court that the convict was arrested by police officers on surveillance patrol on Aug. 3.
He said that when the team searched the convict’s vehicle, they discovered items like iron saw, daggers, saw blades, hand gloves, a knife and spanners.
Ogbobe said during police interrogation, the convict confessed that he was on his way to vandalise electric cables and other government’s installations around Wuye area of Abuja.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 95 of the Penal Code.
