On Friday night, chaos unfolded near Kara-OPIC bus stop along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as a mob reportedly set ablaze a white Toyota Hilux, bearing the number plate EPE80J.
The vehicle, allegedly suffering brake failure, careened into bystanders, resulting in three tragic deaths and two injuries.
Florence Okpe, the spokesperson for Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, conveyed the grim details in a statement on Saturday. The injured were swiftly transported to the Lagos Emergency Centre in Ojota for urgent medical attention.
Distressed relatives at Kara market claimed the corpses of two victims for burial, while the third victim’s body found its way to Idera Morgue in Sagamu.
The statement clarified, “The crash occurred around 2051hrs at Kara-OPIC bus stop, involving a white Toyota Hilux with registration EPE80J. Brake failure led to loss of control, resulting in the vehicle striking individuals at the bus stop. The enraged crowd set the vehicle ablaze in response to the tragic incident.”
Regrettably, this marked the third fatal accident on the route that week. On Thursday, near Fidiwo Bridge, five lost their lives and four were injured in a collision between a red prime bus (MUS191HA) and a Toyota Camry (AKD754BG). Earlier on Wednesday, another accident near NASFAT involved two trucks and a bus, claiming five lives and injuring 10. Reckless driving, particularly a sudden U-turn without signaling, was attributed to the cause of the fatal crash.
