ABUJA (Sundiata Post) – Dr. Doyin Okupe, who was picked up Thursday morning by the Department of State Security (DSS) at the Lagos Airport, Ikeja, has been released.
Okupe recently resigned as the Director General of the Peter Obi/Datti Presidential Campaign Organisation, following his conviction over money laundering charges.
The medical doctor turned politician, was detained briefly by men of the Department of State Security (DSS), while on his way to London for medical treatment, via Virgin Atlantic.
Confirming the development in a tweet, Okupe said, “I was arrested & detained @ the MMIA, Lagos this morning, 12th Jan on my way to UK for medicals; years after my passport had been withheld by the FHC Abuja.
“I just left the EFCC office where Snr Officers in Lagos & Abuja apologised to me for the error.
“OCCUPATIONAL HAZZARD abi?” he said.
The DSS earlier on Thursday had given official reasons for Okupe’s arrest.
According to the agency’s spokesperson, Dr. Peter Afunanya, Okupe was arrested at the instance of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
The statement read; “Doyin Okupe was intercepted by the DSS at Terminal 1 of Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos this morning at the instance of the EFCC.
“He has long been handed over to the Commission which requested for the action. Okupe was billed to fly to London via Virgin Atlantic.”
