EKET (AKWA IBOM) – The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Eket Unit Command, said it had deployed 150 personnel to monitor vehicular traffic on the highways throughout the Easter celebrations in the area.
The Unit Commander, Mr Lucky Ugenlo, said this on Friday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Eket, Akwa Ibom.
“We have deployed 150 personnel including the Special Marshals and Road Safety Club Members to monitor traffic during the Easter period and ensure sanity on the highways during the period.’’
He said that the command had begun special patrol to ensure accident-free Easter celebration as from April 1.
Ugenlo said that the command frowned at excessive speeding, overloading and non-possession of driver’s licence by motorists.
“Easter is by the corner, the command is on the ground and our men are watching traffic offenders because movement of motorists is very high now; people are travelling for the Easter.
“The men are on ground watching over speeding, over loading and driver’s license violation. Easter is the period people go for fake drivers’ license and emergency driver’s license to enable them travel.’’
The commander also urged motorists to eschew “track racing” on the dual carriage ways, warning that offenders would get appropriate sanctions.
“The maximum speed limit on the highway is 100 km per hour, anything above 100 km is not permitted and offenders will be arrested and prosecuted.’’
He maintained that the command would strive towards reducing excessive speeding before, during and after the Easter.

He said that the commission had acquired equipment that would detect those who use speed above 100 km per hours during the period.
Ugenlo also warned that drunken drivers’ vehicles would henceforth be impounded or they would be made to pay a fine before retrieving their vehicles.
He advised motorists to adhere to traffic rules so as to prevent road crashes on the highway.
“I advise the public to use the road with decorum; they should not turn our roads to racing tracks,’’ said the commandant. (NAN)
