ABAKALIKI – Some traders at Abakpa main market, Abakaliki metropolis, Ebonyi, on Saturday decried the low patronage they were experiencing less than 24 hours to the Easter celebration.

One of them, Mr Hyginus Aligwe, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the development could be blamed on the economic situation on ground.

“Most of my customers are not showing up to buy things for the Easter celebration.

“Some that did only bought a few items. The civil servants among them complained of non-payment of their salaries,” he said.

Mrs Mary Eze said her sales did not reflect the sharp increase she witnessed the campaign period.

She, however, expressed optimism that the situation would improve after the Easter celebration.

Eze appealed to the organised labour in the state to save the civil and public servants from hardship by pressing for the payment for their salaries as and when due.

Mrs Cecelia James, a customer, said she could not buy all food items she needed due to paucity of funds.

“I can’t buy everything I need now because of lack of money; that is why my customer is complaining of low patronage,” James said.

Mr levinus Nwogu, another customer, said that most buyers that patronised the market were public servants.

“We plead with relevant authorities to addressing this situation which is already throwing us into hardship,” Nwogu said. (NAN)
