Abuja – The President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, has called on Christians in the country to use the Easter celebration to pray for sustainable peace and economic growth.
Saraki made the call in a statement signed by Yusuph Olaniyonu, his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity on Thursday in Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Christians around the world celebrate Easter in commemoration of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Saraki said that it was imperative for Nigerians to learn from the humility and sacrifice exhibited by Christ when he gave his life for the redemption of mankind.
He commended the Christian community for its fasting and prayers during the Lent and urged the faithful to sustain the tempo for the continued peace and unity of the nation.
He reminded Christians of the need to remain steadfast and always promote religious harmony, describing as panacea for the development of the nation.
He commended the Federal Government for the significant improvement in security across the country in recent times, and called on security agencies to redouble their efforts.
The senate president, however, noted that there was still a long way to go in restoring full security and ensure safe return of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to their communities.
“Let us be rest assured that the end to insurgency and mindless attacks unleashed on innocent Nigerians in some sections of the country by the Boko Haram insurgents is in sight.
“This is the more reason I urge all Nigerians irrespective of region, religion and ethnic affiliation to increase their support for the efforts of the Federal Government to end the menace of Boko Haram,’’ he stated.
He said that the National Assembly would continue to make legislations, including the review and amendment of existing ones to boost security, create conducive business environment and support the fight against corruption. (NAN)
