ABUJA – The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) on Wednesday said it was yet to receive directive for the smooth evacuation of Nigerians who were in countries infested with the Ebola virus.
Mr Emeka Obua, the Public Relations Officer of the service, said this when he spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
“We have not been briefed about any plan to evacuate Nigerians from countries infested with the Ebola virus.
“It has not been brought to our attention by any circular; so am not aware if there have been Nigerians affected with the virus who are coming back into the country,” he said.
The PRO, however, said that officers of the service have continued to take precautionary measures against the virus.
He said that the measures included wearing protective clothing like face masks and hand gloves to prevent contact with infected persons.
“This is a crisis we have on our hands and the precautionary measures we are taking are not different from what the Nigeria Customs Service, Port Health Services and Plant Quarantine Unit are taking.[eap_ad_2]
“We avoid bodily contact and do not allow travellers breathe into our faces.
“We also wear face mask and hand gloves although we cannot for now put on the full gear that those taking care of persons under quarantine wear.
“These are the measures the Ministry of Health has directed us to adopt,” Obua said.
He said that the fear the disease had instilled in citizens had lessened as Nigerians were now properly aware of preventive measures to adopt in order not to be infected.
“People at the airports are going about their normal duties as the previous panic caused by the virus has lessened.
“As advised by health experts, they know that it is important to always disinfect their hands when they come in contact with other people especially those who show signs of ill health,” he said. (NAN)[eap_ad_3]
